Aloha Bread Lovers – This Sunday we will be serving up our tangy Shakshuka. To dispel any confusion, Shakshuka is tomatoes, onions, garlic, olive oil, and spices which all slow cook over night. When you order it, we ladle a generous portion into an iron skillet, crack an egg over it and pop it in the oven for 10 minutes to cook the egg. It is served with a fluffy flat bread that is perfect for mopping up.
A huge mahalo to all who came to support us in what turned out to be a busy week last week with special Brazilian treats and a great Feijoada dinner (thank you to amazing Clara Maia-Williams). The next evening we had the good fortune to have marine biologist Craig Matkin, share some insights from his 40+ years studying Orca’s in Alaska at an Infrequent Motek Talk Story Sunday. Thank you to Craig, Willa and all who showed up for a fascinating presentation. One key takeaway for me was an interesting fact that Orca mothers stay with their pod even after they can no longer give birth, doting over their sons, making sure they eat well (they should compare notes with Yael) so that they can continue the blood line. What was also interesting was to learn that there are three different types of Orcas that in spite of the fact that they all seem to look quite similar, they are each very distinct, eating different diets. Resident Orcas only eat salmon; Transient aka Bigg’s Orca’s only eat other mammals and Offshore Orca’s feed mainly on sharks. These three types will have nothing to do with each other, including no interbreeding. Who knew? And speaking of breeding, we learned that young males tend to play around and hone their skills on each other before they are mature enough to mate with a female.
Staying on the subject of whales, stay tuned for a future Infrequent Talk Story Sunday with another marine biologist specializing in the whales that visit Hawaii. We are thrilled that Seajay (aka C.J.) lead a Talk Story Sunday with us on February 8th at 6:30pm.
Mahalo – David and Yael
