Aloha Bread Lovers – This Sunday we are serving up Jahnun. This is a specialty of the Jews from Yemen made by soaking dough in olive oil then spreading thin, slather with lots of butter, roll up into a roll, put it in a pot, put whole eggs in with them, add some date syrup (silan) and let it slow-cook overnight in a sealed pot. It is served with one of the eggs that was cooked with it and a tomato dipping sauce.
Weather permitting, we will have our favorite Uke Jammers on the lanai…but we need to see what nature has in store for us. This is a tense week in terms of the looming war with Iran. No matter where you are on the political spectrum, I’m sure that we can all agree that our hearts go out to the young men and women and their families who sadly are likely to experience war. There is a Valentine’s Day connection here. There is a legend that Valentine was a priest who secretly married couples in order to get the husband out of military service. This led to his execution by Roman Emperor Claudius II. Fast forward to 1861 when Cadburry began making heart-shaped chocolates and here we are in 2026 at Motek making heart-shaped cookies.
