Aloha Bread Lovers – This Sunday we will be serving up our beloved Uncle Yosef. In case you have forgotten, this is a dish named after Yael’s favorite uncle who used to take her to the Old City in Jerusalem to eat this: a flat bread that is filled with three kinds of cheese and spinach. When you order it, we crack an egg on it (don’t ask for two….can’t do that). It goes into the oven for about 10 minutes to bake and cook. It is then given a healthy dousing of olive oil and chopped green onions and is served with a chopped salad.
Motek is proud to introduce Kohala’s first (that we know of) black and white cookie. Why is this important you ask? Well, there is no such thing as a Jewish bakery or deli that respects itself that does not have black and white cookie. It all began at Glaser’s Bake Shop in New York in 1902. Since then these large discs half of which is covered in black icing and the other half in white icing have become staples of delis and bakeries everywhere. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley in LA, my family regularly ate at Brent’s Deli where the black and white was a family favorite. There is even a Seinfeld episode where Jerry finds that the black and white cookie holds the secret to racial harmony. And now it has arrived in Kohala!!
In other news, we are expecting some stormy weather this weekend. This means that we will postpone the Infrequent Talk Story with our marine biologist friend CJ who plans on bringing us up to speed on the whale situation in the waters around Hawaii. We will reschedule when the weather is more amenable.
